Lagalasso

Gözene

Lagalasso is the Leugaisa of the geographer Ptolemy, and the Ravenna list garbles it as Lacalasin. It lay at Gözene, beside the modern road from Kahramanmaraş to Malatya. Old column pieces reused in later building, among them double columns, pillars carved with half columns, show that this was an ancient settlement, and iron slag on the hillside points to early mining. In 1242 a mountain place called Bet Goze is named here, a day's journey from Melitene.
