Sama

Pınarbaşı, ehem. Samanköy

Sama sits in an odd spot on the map: because the name and the distance figure are not lined up, the name seems to stand at the end of the previous stretch, before its own station mark. The place is the Semissos of the geographer Ptolemy, and the Ravenna list writes Samma castorum, perhaps a slip for castrum, a fort. It lay at Pınarbaşı, once Samanköy, on the edge of modern Malatya, close to ancient Melitene. In 1124 Muhammad, son of the emir Gazi, besieged Melitene from here and took it.
