Sapham

Bâbil

Listen to the story

Sapham is the Sapha of the Ravenna list and the Sapphe of the geographer Ptolemy, and Plutarch mentions it in his life of Lucullus; for the historian Ammianus it is probably Bezabde. It is placed near Ibn Omar on the Tigris, where the modern town stands on an island in the river, while the ancient one lay on the west bank, on moderately high ground. The map counts twenty-eight Roman miles from Sarbane, and the road beyond crosses the Tigris.
