Ad Aras

? Pirot, Kıyıcak oder am linken Euphrat-Ufer bei Kadiköy ?

Ad Aras means at the altars, probably frontier altars on the Euphrates. One suggestion links the place with a story told by the Greek writer Plutarch: in 69 BC the Roman general Lucullus found the river swollen by winter storms, but overnight it sank so far that the locals saw a sign from the gods, and after crossing he sacrificed a bull to the Euphrates in thanks. The station is sought at Pirot, where rescue digs before the valley was flooded found early Roman walls and a coin of Valerian. On the map it already lies under the red label for deserts uninhabitable for lack of water.
