Corne

? Cafer Kale (wohl eher als Kerar Kale? · Mündungsgebiet des Şiro Çay bei Bürçköy)?

Listen to the story

Corne, the Korne of the geographer Ptolemy, opens the map's road down the Euphrates from Melitene, a road that links the garrison posts on the river bank instead of taking the direct route over the uplands. It may be the spacious stone fortress reported at Cafer Kale, on a low hill some seven hundred metres from the river, near Caferhan, a place flooded since 1987. One suggestion even derives the name from the horn-like shape of the Malatya plain. The figure eight from Melitene seems wrong as Roman miles, but would fit well if it counted Persian parasangs.
