Metita

? Mamaş bei Damli in der Nähe von Keferdis · Doğanyol ? oder bei Tillo ?)

Listen to the story

Metita was a frontier garrison on the Euphrates, held in late Roman times by a cohort of Petraeans. The geographer Ptolemy wrote the name Meteita, the older form; the map, like the late Roman list of garrisons and the Ravenna list, already shows the later pronunciation with an i. The station may have stood at Mamaş near Damli, on a flat headland commanding the mouth and wide valley of the Şiro river. Either way the stage from Corne is unusually long: perhaps a station is missing, or the map here records a journey by river rather than by road.
