Micenis

Mykene · Μυκήνες

Micenis is Mycenae in Greece, the great citadel of the Bronze Age on a steep spur above the plain of Argos, with its Cyclopean walls, its palace and the Lion Gate. Destroyed around 1200 BC, it later revived on a small scale and even sent a few men to fight the Persians at Thermopylae and Plataea, before Argos destroyed it between 468 and 460 BC; by Roman times it was little more than a famous ruin. Ancient writers explained the name from the tip of a sword sheath that Perseus lost here. The map's spelling with an i points to a late copy.
