Milatis

Banoštor

Listen to the story

Milatis, better known as Malata, was a fort on the Danube at Banoštor in Serbia, which a Roman register of routes, the Greek geographer Ptolemy and the Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus call Bononia. It housed Dalmatian horsemen, and facing it across the river stood the fort of Onagrinum in barbarian land. Roman milestones found at Petrovaradin count sixteen miles from Malata to Cusum, the same figure the map gives, though the stretch on to Cusum has no starting mark. From Cuccium, too, the map counts sixteen.
