Mons Balabo

Monte Marzano? [Pleiades] · Monte Billari? [6]

Listen to the story

Above the drawn ridge of the southern Apennines, on the road from Acerronia to Lucos, the map writes Mons Balabo, Mount Balabus, but gives it no stopping mark of its own and no distances on either side. It may be the name of a mountain slipped into the road by a copyist, or a station named after a nearby height, like Mons Imeus in the Abruzzo. It is usually sought near Balvano, perhaps at the pass by Monte Marzano.
