Monte Aureo

Seona

Monte Aureo, the golden mountain, was a fort on the Danube at Seona near Smederevo in Serbia. Here, as the Roman historians Eutropius and Aurelius Victor tell, the emperor Probus set his soldiers to planting vineyards on the hillside, and not far off, between Viminacium and the golden mountain, Diocletian defeated his rival Carinus in the battle of the Margus. The pilgrim from Bordeaux calls the place a city, and in late Roman times Dalmatian horsemen were stationed here.
