Metropolis
Yeniköy
Metropolis took its name from the Mother of the Gods; its ruins lie near Yeniköy, on the road from Smyrna to Ephesus, in country that the Greek geographer Strabo praised for its wine. Greeks settled here from about 750 BC, and the city flourished under the kings of Pergamon and again in the imperial period, with a theatre, baths and a temple of Ares on its walled acropolis. A mocking Greek epigram told the place to become a city first before calling itself a mother city. On the map no distance figure links it to either neighbour.
