Colofon
südl. von Degirmendere am Golf von Kuşadası an der Mündung des Avci Çayi
Colofon stands on the coast here, so the map means Colophon by the Sea, the harbour town once called Notion, and not old Colophon, which lay inland near Değirmendere. Settlers from Aeolis founded the port on a bay of the Gulf of Kuşadası at the mouth of the Avcı Çayı; the bay has since silted up. The harbour soon stepped out of the shadow of the inland city and took the name Colophon by the Sea, and from the 1st century AD the old name Notion fell out of use. The Roman geographer Mela credits its founding to Mopsus, son of Manto.
