Coloe
Listen to the story
Coloe, the Choloe of the geographer Ptolemy, was a place on the road from Amasia to Neocaesarea, and its site is still open. One candidate is Dörtyol, once called Kalekale, where the old name was thought to survive, though this has been doubted; another is Ballıca, formerly Darma, which suits the map's figures better and has yielded ancient finds. Several other villages along the road also have ancient remains. The Ravenna list turns the name into Colonia, and older research linked it with a Koloneia whose bishop is named in a church history.
