Colcisindorum
Korkei
Colcisindorum, the Kolchoi of the Indians, was the chief port of the Pandya rulers near the southern tip of India, on the river Tamraparni and facing the island of Taprobane. Tamil poems know it as Korkai, and the geographer Ptolemy named the bay that is now the Gulf of Mannar after it. Pearls were fished and traded here. On the map the name sits inland, in unusually small letters, its ending shortened by a scribal sign, as if the copyist were saving space or had squeezed it in later.
