Tundis

Ponnāni

Tundis, the Tyndis of the Greek sources, was one of the harbours of Rome's trade with southern India and is placed today at Ponnani. Like Muziris, the map gives it as a lone name, linked neither to other ports nor to any road inland. Ptolemy names it as the first place on the Limyrike coast, and finds of Roman coins show a strong Roman presence in the first century AD. Tamil poems praise a very rich town called Tondi, busy with trade and fishing, though whether it is the same place remains uncertain.
