Tubonis

Tobna (Barrington) · Tubna (Miller)

Listen to the story

Tubonis is Thubunae, today Tobna in Algeria, a town the Roman writer Pliny already knew as Tuben. Bishops of Thubunae are recorded in 256 and 411, and in late Roman times a whole frontier sector, the limes Tubuniensis, took its name from the town. Roads with milestones ran on from here to Diana and Cirta, yet on the map the line stops at Tubonis: no onward stretch is drawn. The map sets it twenty-five Roman miles from Vaccae.
