Road station
Turiostu
Listen to the story
Turiostu is one of the map's unsolved names, found nowhere else. It stands on the coast road from Tarentum to Heraclea, exactly where one would expect Metapontum, the famous Greek city where Pythagoras spent his last years, which the map leaves out altogether. Perhaps the name and its distance of twenty-five Roman miles were misplaced from an inland road, or perhaps Turiostu was a late name for a station near Metapontum.
