Turnaco

Tournai

Tvrnaco is Turnacum, today Tournai in Belgium, on both banks of the Scheldt, where the land of the Menapii met that of the Nervii. It grew under Claudius, when troops gathered here for the invasion of Britain, and it flourished on its stone quarries and trade until raiders from the Chauci plundered it around 172. In late antiquity it became the chief town of the Menapii, walled into a small fortress, and after the Vandals passed through in 407, the Salian Franks made it their royal residence. The richly furnished grave of their king Childeric, who died in 482, was found here.
