Colonia equestris

Nyon

Colonia Equestris is Nyon on Lake Geneva in Switzerland, once a Celtic fortified town called Noviodunum. Around 45 BC Caesar refounded it as a colony for veterans of his legions, who received land taken from the Helvetii after their defeat at Bibracte, and the name, the Colony of the Horsemen, suggests they were cavalrymen, set here to guard the road from Geneva towards the Great Saint Bernard. The town prospered under Augustus and Tiberius, and its amphitheatre was discovered only in 1996. On the map some letters of the name are damaged.
