Comum, now Como at the southern end of its lake, suffered from raids by the Raeti of the Alps until Rome restored it; in 59 BC Julius Caesar added five thousand colonists and called it New Comum. It was known for its iron works and was the birthplace of Pliny the Younger, whose letters describe his villas on the lake. On the map the third letter of the name is damaged, and the edition of 1753 confirms that it is an m.
