Columna Regia
S. Domenica bei Catona (Miller)
Listen to the story
Columna Regia, the column of Rhegium, was a tower-like pillar that the people of Rhegium, modern Reggio Calabria, set up on the Strait of Messina to mark the edge of their territory, as the Greek geographer Strabo describes. The Tabula shows a small drawing of a farmstead but no name beside it; the label was lost and has been restored from other sources. The drawing suits a proper station, and a Roman register of routes calls the place the crossing to Sicily. It is usually placed at Santa Domenica near Catona in Calabria, though Cannitello is also proposed, and excavation has confirmed neither.
