Amasia

Amasya

Listen to the story

Here the map sets a pair of towers for Amasia, today Amasya in Turkey, but in the wrong place: the city is drawn a second time, again with two towers, in a more accurate position elsewhere on the map. The slip seems to come from a mix-up with Amastris, a town on the southern coast of the Black Sea, whose name is garbled close by into Mastrum. That is why the stations that follow, Cromen, Cythero, Carambas and Stefane, really belong on that coast. The map counts sixteen Roman miles from Virasia and eleven on to Cromen.
