City
Amurio
Hisar Köy, früher Hergan Kale
Listen to the story
Amurio is a late form of an old Phrygian city name, found only on this map; the city's ruins lie at Hisar Köy in central Turkey, settled from the early Bronze Age to Ottoman times. Unusually, the name sits beside its small drawing of a building rather than above it, the only practical spot if a road was to lead to the unnamed symbol standing for Ancyra. The copyist then forgot that road line, and its figure of eight Roman miles is far too short for cities so far apart. Set nearer the word Galatia than Phrygia, the town mirrors its probable transfer to a Galatian province at the end of the fourth century.
