Ancyra

Ankara

Listen to the story

Ancyra, today Ankara in Turkey, is drawn as an elaborate six-sided walled city, yet no name stands beside it, and a list of places compiled in Ravenna leaves it out too, so the name may already have been missing from their shared source. The Greek name means anchor: the writer Pausanias tells of an anchor found by the legendary founder Midas and shown in a temple of Zeus. As capital of Galatia, the city had a temple of Rome and Augustus inscribed with the emperor's own account of his deeds. Drawings like this often mark imperial residences, and Emperor Arcadius spent his summers here.
