Annibali

Catanzaro Lido [Pleiades]

Listen to the story

Annibali recalls the Carthaginian general Hannibal: the Roman writer Pliny names a harbour here called Hannibal's Camp, on the Gulf of Squillace in Calabria, where Italy is narrower than anywhere else. Its site is usually placed near Catanzaro Lido, though scholars disagree, because the map's distance figures along this coast are corrupt. Some look near Soverato Marina, others a kilometre from Paliporto, where a harbour area with storehouses has been excavated. On the map itself, the last two letters of the name are cut short so that the word does not run into the open sea.
