Andemantunno
Langres
Listen to the story
Andemantunno was the chief town of the Lingones, a Gallic people, and is today Langres in France. It stood on a plateau ringed by steep slopes, where roads from the Atlantic to northern Italy crossed those from the Mediterranean to the Rhine, and a Roman gate still survives there. The pair of towers marking it holds a surprise: it was added later by a second hand, drawn visibly over the red road line and shaped unlike the map's usual towers. Close by, a similar later hand corrected the river name Riger to Liger, the Loire.
