Teos
Sığacık
Teos, at Sığacık on the Turkish coast, was an Ionian city with two harbours on a small peninsula, and Herodotus called it the centre of Ionia. It was the home of the poet Anacreon. Under pressure from the Persian king Cyrus, many of its people left in 543 BC and founded Abdera in Thrace. A Greek legend explained the name with a pun: while Athamas looked for a site, his little daughter built him a city of stones in the meantime, teos in Greek. The map folds this whole coast round to fit its narrow format and simplifies it heavily.
