Road station
Themnum
Nemrut Kalesi · Nemrutkale bei Gurice · Görece
Themnum is Temnos, one of the old Aeolian cities, at Nemrut Kalesi near Görece. A Greek story derived the name from the word for cutting: the founder Malaos built his city where, as an oracle foretold, the axle of his chariot snapped. Pausanias describes a statue of Aphrodite here carved from a living myrtle, said to be a gift of Pelops. Cicero pictures the town's meticulous finances, where no coin could move without praetors, quaestors and four elected bankers. The map puts the station on the wrong road; it belongs on the road from Thyatira to Smyrna.
