Lybicum Pelagus

Syrten-Meer (Miller)

Libycum Pelagus, the Libyan Sea, is spelt in capitals spaced so widely that its letters lie scattered across the map: the A just above Tapostri, the G below Tyatira, the V below Teos. The E has vanished altogether. The name covered the waters of both Syrtes off North Africa, and ancient writers from Pliny to Orosius use it. The mapmaker clearly took care to name both this sea and the Cretan Sea directly above it.
