Listen to the story
Luppia is Lupiae, now Lecce, a Messapian town that became a Roman municipium, with a theatre and an amphitheatre whose remains lie in the middle of the modern city. The emperor Hadrian built it a harbour on the coast at San Cataldo, and it was here that the young Octavian landed from across the Adriatic after Caesar's murder. Marcus Aurelius even traced his family back to the town's legendary founder, Malemnius.
