Lugione
Dunaszekcső
Listen to the story
Lugione is Lugio, today Dunaszekcső in Hungary, a Roman fort probably founded under Domitian to guard a crossing of the Danube and a road junction. Cohorts from Spain, from the Breuci and from Noricum served here in turn; in late Roman times, renamed Florentia, it held Dalmatian horsemen, a detachment of the Second Legion and a commander of the Danube fleet, with a small fort on the opposite bank. On the map the next stage, twelve miles to Antiana, is too short: a Roman register of routes gives twenty-five, with Altinum in between.
