Luco

Luc en Diois

Luco is Lucus Augusti, the sacred grove of Augustus, today Luc-en-Diois on the Drôme. The Roman naturalist Pliny names it as one of the two capitals of the Vocontii, beside Vaison. The Roman historian Tacitus tells how Valens, a commander for Vitellius, threatened to set fire to the town and was only bought off with money. Later it lost its rank to nearby Die, and in the pilgrim from Bordeaux's list it is a mere overnight stop. Many inscriptions have been found there.
