Loteva

Lodève

Loteva is Lodève, a town of the Volcae Arecomici at the foot of the Cévennes, on the road that came down from Rodez into the province of Narbonensis. The name perhaps comes from a brook, meaning something like clay water. The Roman naturalist Pliny calls its people Lutevani, also known as Foroneronienses: the town bore the added name Forum Neronis in honour of Tiberius Claudius Nero, father of the emperor Tiberius, and the word forum points to a market. A late Roman list of the cities of Gaul records it as a city in its own right, and it later became a bishopric.
