Lorio

Castel di Guido (La Botaccia)

Listen to the story

Lorio is Lorium, at La Bottaccia near Castel di Guido, twelve Roman miles, about eighteen kilometres, out of Rome on the Via Aurelia. Here stood the villa where the emperor Antoninus Pius grew up and where he died, and the young Marcus Aurelius stayed here too, as his letters with his teacher Fronto show. Roman calendars even mark the twenty-fifth of February with the word Lorio, for games held here on the anniversary of Pius's adoption by Hadrian.
