Via Triumfalis

Via Triumfalis, the Triumphal Way, is written on the map beside Saint Peter's, Ad Sanctum Petrum, just across the Tiber from Rome, and the name is partly damaged. The road ran from the Vatican over Monte Mario to join the road north at La Giustiniana, and on the map it crosses the Tiber by Hadrian's bridge. Despite its name, the great triumphal processions did not take this route, and why it was so called is unknown. From the second century it had curators of its own, shared with the Aurelia and the Cornelia. Early editors even read the name as two separate places.
