Vicentia

Vicenza

Listen to the story

Vicetia, now Vicenza, was a modest town of the Veneti where two rivers meet, and the writer Aelian praised its eels as exceptionally fine. It first appears in history on a boundary stone of 135 BC that settled its border with neighbouring Ateste, now Este. On the map a faint stroke over the e turns the name into Vicentia, the later form, and that pale stroke may have been added by a later hand.
