Vicinium

Ulcinj

Vicinium is Ulcinj on the coast of Montenegro, the Roman Olcinium; the map's spelling seems miscopied from a popular form, Vlcinium. The Roman writer Pliny says the town was once called Colchinium and founded by Colchians, a story drawn from the similar sound of the names. It went over to Rome in the war against the Illyrian king Gentius and was freed from land tax. On the map it comes before Budva, but on the ground the order is the other way round.
