Via Numentana

Listen to the story

Via Numentana is the map's spelling of the Via Nomentana, which ran from Rome across the Anio to Nomentum, today Mentana, and on to Eretum, where it joined the Salt Road. The Roman historian Livy says it was once called the Via Ficulensis, and that the plebeians marched out along it to the Sacred Mount in one of their great protests. Near the fourth milestone, between the Salaria and the Nomentana, Nero spent his last hours. An inscription names a curator of the Nomentana who had also counted the Roman citizens of Colchester in Britain.
