Fidenis

Borgata Fidene · Fiano (Weiss)

Listen to the story

Fidenis is Fidenae, an old Latin town on a hill above the Tiber, only five or six Roman miles from Rome, and for centuries a bridgehead for Rome's Etruscan enemy Veii. By the time of the poet Horace it was almost deserted. Then, in 27 AD, a hastily built wooden amphitheatre collapsed here during a show, and the historian Tacitus describes the huge number of victims, most of them spectators who had come out from Rome.
