Faro di Alessandria

Iskandariya

Listen to the story

The Pharos, the famous lighthouse of Alexandria in Egypt, stands on the coast by the western mouth of the Nile, drawn as a tower with its beacon fire on top but with no name. The city itself is missing. Below the lighthouse lies an empty space, apparently left for a grand picture like those of Rome, Constantinople and Antioch. Scholars still disagree why it stayed blank; perhaps a copyist simply forgot. The letter A on the tower's second storey was probably added in modern times by an owner of the map. The lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was probably begun around 297 BC under King Ptolemy the First.
