Falera

Paralos · Stylis

Falera is Phalara, today Stylida in Greece, the harbour of Lamia on the Malian Gulf. An earthquake destroyed it in 426 BC, but it was rebuilt and stayed a busy port; the Roman historian Livy describes its bustle in the days of Philip of Macedon, and fine Roman villas and late Roman baths have been found there. Its place on the map is odd: after Crannon one would expect Pharsalus, and perhaps the mapmaker skipped that name because it began like Falera.
