Faleros

S. Maria di Fálleri? (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Faleros is Falerii, chief town of the Faliscans, a people living among the Etruscans but speaking their own Italic dialect; legend made an Argive hero its founder. When Camillus besieged it in 394 BC, a schoolmaster led the sons of the leading families out to the Roman camp as hostages. Camillus had the traitor driven back into town, whipped by his own pupils, and the Faliscans, moved by such fairness, surrendered. The poet Ovid's wife came from here.
