Fenchi

Abu Gerg (Miller) · el-Fant (Barrington)

Fenchi stands where the ink along the Nile has faded badly, and the name itself is probably garbled. Behind it most likely lies Oxyrhynchus on Joseph's canal. Two explanations for the slip have been offered: a copyist may have read a shortened Greek form, Rhynchi, and taken its first letter, rho, for a phi; or the word may go back to Pemje, the town's name in Ptolemaic times, drawn from its Egyptian name Per-medjed. In the 6th century the town also bore the name New City of Justin.
