Venne
Bamha (Barrington)
Listen to the story
Venne is the Latin form of Ouenne, a village whose Greek name appears in papyri of the 1st century; it was also written Penne or Peme, and the Roman register of routes calls it Peme. Ptolemy names the place Hypsele, and the district's coins struck under Trajan and Hadrian carry that name. The site is placed at Bamha. Judging by the distances, the map seems to have swapped it with its neighbour Sinottum. On the stretch on to Babylonia the road crosses the Nile, labelled the river that divides Asia from Libya.
