Auleu
Ussim (Miller) · Ausim (Barrington)
Auleu, whose first two letters have almost faded, is Letopolis, the city of Leto, at Ausim on the south-western tip of the Nile Delta, capital of the second district of Lower Egypt. Its weight was religious more than political: the god Khenti-irti was worshipped here, later equated with Haroeris, and his sacred animals were the ichneumon and the shrew, known from many small bronze figures. Though religious texts mention the town often, the ground has yielded only scant remains, all from the late period of pharaonic Egypt. In Christian times it was a bishop's seat.
