Auido

Maltepe

Avido is a late, vulgar Latin form of Abydos, the city at Maltepe near Çanakkale, on the narrowest point of the Dardanelles, facing Sestos across the water. The Greek geographer Strabo calls it a colony of Miletus, founded with the leave of the Lydian king Gyges, and says that here Xerxes bridged the strait between Europe and Asia. It was also the setting of the tale of Hero and Leander, though nothing of that famous position shows on the map, which gives the city no picture at all. In antiquity the people of Abydos had a proverbially bad name.
