Dardano

2 Meilen südl. von Kepez

Dardano is Dardanos, the town that gave the Dardanelles their name, on the low headland of Kepez Burnu in Turkey. Legend made the hero Dardanus its founder; in fact Aeolian Greeks probably settled it in the 7th or 6th century BC. The geographer Strabo found it so slight that kings kept moving its people to Abydos and then back again. Yet in 411 BC the Spartans suffered a heavy defeat at sea just off the town, and here in 84 BC Sulla met Mithridates to end their first war. In the Middle Ages its buildings served as a quarry.
