Darantasia

Moûtiers en Tarantaise

Darantasia is Moûtiers, which gave its name to the whole Tarentaise valley. From the fourth century it was the chief town of the Ceutrones, the Alpine people of the valley, and a late Roman list of the cities of Gaul calls it their metropolis. In 74 the boundary of the Ceutrones was fixed by the commander of the army of Upper Germany, as an inscription records. Merovingian coins still read Darantasia, while later writers already use the form Tarantasia. Older research once equated the town with Forum Claudii, but that is unlikely.
