Cyllene
Kyllini · Κυλλήνη
Cyllene is the harbour of Elis, near Kyllini in Greece, known since Homer and used by the Spartans as a naval base. In 209 BC a Roman commander crossed from Naupactus with fifteen ships, landed his troops here and marched them into Elis in silence by night. The Greek geographer Strabo admired an ivory statue of Asclepius in the village, and Pausanias found Hermes worshipped here in a strange, phallic form. Between the fourth and sixth centuries AD a tsunami wrecked the harbour; in the Middle Ages the place revived as Glarentza.
