Cunu Aureu

Julierpass

Listen to the story

Cunu Aureu, perhaps the golden wedge, marks the crossing of the high Alps on the road from Chur to Chiavenna, and which pass it was is disputed: the Splügen, where the customs area was still called Cuneo d'oro in local speech in recent times, or the Julier and Septimer, where a Roman military camp has been found. The Greek historian Polybius knew only four routes over the Alps, and the easternmost, through the land of the Raeti, probably led over these passes.
